Relationship Counselling – Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is relationship counselling?
Relationship counselling (sometimes called couples therapy) is a form of talking therapy that helps partners improve communication, understand relationship patterns, and work through difficulties such as conflict, disconnection, trust issues or emotional distance. Relationship counselling offers a supportive space to explore challenges together and find healthier ways to move forward. Relationship counselling isn't just for couples, it can be useful for those in throuples, quads, Vs or other non-traditional relationships.

How does relationship counselling work?
Relationship counselling focuses on how you relate to one another, rather than placing blame. I will offer a free telephone consultation with each partner separately before we agree to work together. The therapy sessions explore communication styles, emotional needs, recurring patterns and past experiences that may be affecting your relationship. The aim is to build understanding, strengthen connection and support positive change.

What happens in the first relationship counselling session?
Your first session is an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to achieve. We’ll explore your relationship history, current concerns and goals for therapy. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out — it’s about starting the conversation in a safe, supportive environment.

-
Can relationship counselling help with communication problems?
Yes. Many seek relationship counselling because they feel stuck in unhelpful communication patterns. Therapy can help you understand how you communicate, express yourselves more clearly, and listen to each other with greater empathy and understanding.

-
How long does relationship counselling take?
The number of sessions varies depending on your needs and goals. Some couples benefit from short-term relationship counselling, while others choose longer-term support. This can be reviewed together as therapy progresses. Sessions are usually 50 minutes and cost £75, though there is the option of 90 minute sessions (these will incur a fee increase).

-
Will relationship counselling make things worse?
Talking about sensitive issues can sometimes feel uncomfortable at first, but this is a normal part of the process. Relationship counselling is structured to help conversations feel contained, respectful and productive, rather than overwhelming.

-
Do we both need to attend relationship counselling?
Relationship counselling usually involves both partners attending together so the focus can remain on the relationship itself. In some cases, individual sessions may also be helpful and can be discussed if appropriate.

-
Is relationship counselling confidential?
Yes. Relationship counselling is confidential, and what is discussed in sessions is treated with respect and privacy, unless there is a serious concern about safety for yourselves or others.

-
How do we know if relationship counselling is right for us?
If you’re experiencing ongoing conflict, feeling disconnected, struggling to communicate, or facing a difficult transition, relationship counselling may help. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit — many couples attend to strengthen their relationship and prevent problems from becoming more entrenched.
